California’s landscape is primarily sunny and amber, with warm colours. The ’70s landscape evokes golden afternoons with plenty of earthy and warm tones of orange and red buildings, green trees in the city, and blue skies. A thousand skies. The size. The interiors are mostly dark oak wood and brown leather. Skin tones are always natural, and black levels are deep and inky. The arcade has many neon signs with bright primary colours, especially at the vendor convention.
Wider shots give a complete picture of Los Angeles in the ’70s. Besides being sharp and vivid, the close-ups reveal individual hairs, stubble, freckles, wrinkles, and makeup applications in rich detail. The lovely grain adds a nostalgic touch that never resembles a digital image. This is a stunning video with no problems.

Featuring DTS-HD MA 5.1
This release features a fantastic lossless DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio mix, which kicks into high gear when needed. The sound effects of cars driving are excellent. , kids are yelling on the streets, and car horns and arcade machines are sounding. Hearing the moving truck driving down the hill and Twitter filling the water beds is a joy.
One of the most prominent sounds comes from a motorcycle stunt and all the fantastic song cues that provide that rumble and low end. It is always easy to follow the dialogue because it is clean, clear, and concise. While this track is primarily front-heavy, ambient noises often come through the surround speakers. The audio presentation sounds excellent.
Only 18 minutes of footage are included here, all of which have no rhyme or reason. There are no interviews, commentaries, or bloopers. Everyone is wearing masks due to COVID-19 as well. These are not very impressive extras, which means someone like Criterion will release this soon in 4K with a substantial number of enhanced bonus features.
- Camera Tests (HD, 4 min.) – Behind-the-scenes footage of actors rehearsing and blocking their dialogue and movements.
- A deleted scene with Alana and Gary was left on the cutting room floor for unknown reasons.
- Commercial for Fat Bernie (HD, 1 minute) – The full commercial for Fat Bernie.
- Behind The Scenes (HD, 11 minutes) – Contains photos and videos of the actors and crew working on the movie.
