Her first marriage was to Boyd Black, whom she married in 1979 during their time at Juilliard. Unfortunately, due to some personal reasons, their marriage ended in divorce in 1981.

Later on, McGillis married Fred Tillman in 1989. They had two daughters together, and the marriage ended in divorce in 2002. Tragically, in April 1996, a schooner owned by McGillis and Tillman, called “The Centurion,” was destroyed by fire at a marina in Dania, Florida.
